Breaking Marriage Formula

Scientists have invented a mathematic model that surprisingly accurately can predict if a marriage will break up or not. The formula developed by a team of researches (phychology expert and two applied mathematics specialists) allows to forecast with 94 percent of accuracy which couples will end up in divorce and which one will stay together.

John Gottman, psychologist of the CWU (Central Washington Univeristy, Ellensburg), says that a number of equations can predict if the marriage is going to be successful or not. It is enough to observe a couple’s discussion of a disputable issue concerning for example sex, money, children upbringing and it will be clear if the marriage is successful or not.

Partners are given points for positive and negative signals during the conversation, and the ratio of these points is very important in defining if the marriage is successful or not.

Jokes, coquettish and tender gestures, smiles and soul intonation are counted for as positive signals, while rolled up eyes, sarcasm and other are counted for as negative signals. Ideal ratio is 5 positive signals vs 1 negative, it is quite possible that any couple that has a worse ratio will end up in trouble – reported Mr. Gottman during the meeting of the American association of science assistance in Seattle.

“Before the model was suggested we had no idea how to forecast probability of a husband and a wife, nor did we know how to carry our the analysis of the couples living together or divorced” – says Gottman. “When people speak about important matter they might argue at some points but at the same time smile and tease one another. Signs of affection are obvious, because partners have established emotional connection”

Meanwhile many people do not know how to effectively communicate with one another, so the plausible reason of why people get divorced is because they do not know how to install emotional connections. Without the math model we would not be able to notice it. It gives an opportunity to describe the relations of the people and explain the forces behind it. Mathematics clearly demonstrates to us what is going on when people are interacting with one another.

The results of the research were based upon analysis of 700 just married couples from Seattle, who were observed after the marriage and for the further 10 years. Participants of the research were not informed about its results.
